Preventative

A preventative control is one which prevents an error.  For example, reviewing a journal entry.  The error will be corrected prior to the journal entry being posted and the error will not be booked. 

Detective

A detective control detects an error after it is has been made. For example, reviewing an account reconciliation and finding a mistake.  A correcting journal entry will be made to adjust the error in the subsequent month.

Manual

A manual control is one which is completely manual or a human intervenes.  For example, some companies use of a lockbox.  In accounting there is always going to be some judgment or level of human intervention involved.

Systemic 

A systemic control is one which is fully autonomous or automated.  For example, batch processing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, etc.
